Named after an elevated area found between the Navasota River and Christmas Creek, Prairie Hill is located in northwestern Limestone County. A Masonic temple was organized in 1892 while the school was established two years later. The Church of Christ was built in 1913 but closed in 1962 and the building was leased out and converted into a civic center in 1975. This strengthened the community. The community reached its peak during the Great Depression but declined since the early 1940s. However, the community has remained stable for the last thirty years. As of 2000 census the population has remained at 150.
