Thought to be the oldest continuously cultivated area in the US, Presidio is located in southern Presidio County. Farmers have settled at Presidio since 1500 BC. The first Spaniard to visit the area was Cabeza de Vaca in 1553 when it became a stop on the shipwrecked sailor's famous tour. Ben Leaton and Milton Faver built private forts in the area. The area was subject to violent Indian attacks prior to the Civil War. But that stopped when a post office was established in 1868. The town incorporated in 1981. At the end of 1988 Presidio experienced a population boom due in part to previously undocumented immigrants enrolled in the amnesty program.
