Purdon is located in south-central Navarro County. It was originally known as Belle Point. Captain J. A. Harrison is regarded as being the first settler here and is credited with donating land for a church and school. The town was named after Ada Purdom when the lots were platted. The railroad arrived in 1882 and was known by its famous nickname ‘The Cotton Belt Line’. The “triple whammy” of the Great Depression, World War II and postwar prosperity reduced the population to just 200 by the late 1950s. In 2000 census the population declined to 133.
