Quail is located in central Collingsworth County. It was named because of the abundance of quails in the area. The brothers, W. I. and T. S. Atkinson were the first to grow cotton in the county in 1890. By 1904, Greer Powell started a cotton gin in Quail. That same year the town had the telephone service-connected. By 1909 the Baptist and Methodist churches had established congregations, with the Church of Christ following several years later. A new school building was completed in 1927 and enlarged as a consolidated school in 1935. The population dropped to 33 in 2000 from 92 in 1990.
