Named after the Comanche chief, Quanah Parker, Quanah is located in central Hardeman County. The community developed slowly until the railroad arrived in 1887. The county seat was originally Margaret, but Quanah won the county seat election in 1890. A flood wrecked the town’s crops in 1891 and in the same year, a fire broke through. Quanah recovered and rebuilt to maintain its place as Hardeman County's market center. Quanah's economic position as a shipping center for cattle, cotton, wheat, oats, and barley was improved with the discovery of the Conley oilfield southwest of town in 1959. The population was 3,022 as of 2000.
