Rainbow, Texas can be found in northeast Somervell County. William Porter was among the first settlers who had established a school in the late 1860s. Hence the area was referred to as the Porter school district for several decades. In the 1890s, the townspeople gathered to name the community but a thunderstorm followed by a rainbow broke out. The residents were awed by the rainbow and named their town after it. The main economic influence was farming. In the 1970s, the town opened a Dinosaur Valley State Park which boosted the growth of the area. The current population is estimated to be from 76 to 121.
