Ransom County is on the North Fork of the Double Mountain Fork of the Brazos River in Yellow House Canyon near Buffalo Springs Lake in southeast Lubbock County. It began in the mid-1960s as a development project, promoted by Chapman and Chapman of Lubbock. The area changed its name from Lake Ransom Canyon to Ransom Canyon in April of 1984 after being incorporated in December 1977. The name came when New Mexican traders known as Comancheros bought captives and demanded some sort of ransom for their release. By the 1870s mostly buffalo hunters and ranchers occupied the area. Ransom was the site of a Vogue magazine fall-fashion shoot in 2013.
