Rice is a city in the U.S located along the U.S Highway 287 and Interstate 45 in Navarro County. The area received its first settlers in the late 1860s. The Houston and Texas Central Railway was established through Rice by 1872. The city was named after William Marsh Rice, who gave the land for the establishment of a cemetery and a church. L. B. Haynie operated the first general store in this city. In 1872, the first post office was founded in the area. Due to the development of this area, a cotton gin and a gristmill were established by 1890.
