Rio Frio is an unincorporated community in Real County, Texas, United States. The first settlers in this area arrived between 1856 and 1860. Theophilus Watkins was among the early settlers in the community in 1867. An irrigation canal was established in this area by Newman Patterson, Theophilus Watkins, and F. Smith in 1868. The trio later founded the Lombardy Irrigation Company in 1875. A post office was also established in 1875. Rio Frio's cotton gin, which was the last in operation in the county, ceased its activities near World War 1. By 1871, a school was founded in this community.
