The U.S city of Rockport is located along the State Highway 35 in Aransas County in the state of Texas. The city was founded after the Civil War. Rockport was named after a rock ledge that underlies its shore. The city started as a slaughtering, packing and shipping point for cattle. In 1865, William S. Hall established the first packing point in this area. Later in 1866, Richard Wood and James M. Doughty erected cattle pens. The pens served as cattle holding points before slaughter. In 1867, John Mathis became the first mayor in Rockport. Later in 1870, Rockport was incorporated.
