Saltillo is an unincorporated community in Hopkins County that can be found in the eastern region of the U.S. state of Texas. Interestingly, it was the state capital of Texas when its location was still part of the Coahuila state of Mexico; Austin then became the state capital when Texas won its independence. Then, the area was first settled in 1850 by John Arthur, a businessman who named the community after the city of Saltillo in Mexico. The community soon became a popular truckers camp and a decade later, its post office was inaugurated and a rival store across John Arthur’s shop nicknamed the town “Twin Groceries.” The town continued its growth and development when two rail lines were built in the area. By 1914, the town had 350 residents and several businesses. However, the number of townsmen started to decrease in the early 1930s when the Great Depression hit the town. The population remained to be at 200 from 1990 to 2000.
