San Elizario is a city in El Paso County, Texas, United States. The city has a population of about 9,500 and it lies on the Rio Grande, which forms a boundary between the US and Mexico. It’s one of the oldest communities in the region, with settlers first establishing a presence in 1598. The city was the first county seat of El Paso, but losing a lot of its population to the Salt War and being bypassed by the railroad in the 1870s contributed to its decline. The city was first incorporated in 1851 but experienced many disincorporations before finally becoming an official city in 2013. The heart of the city features the national historically registered presidio chapel. It was the location for the wedding scene in the movie Fandango (1985), which was filmed on the plaza of the San Elizario Chapel.
