Santa Maria is a census-designated place (CDP) in Cameron County, Texas, United States. In 2010 it had a population of 733. It’s based on one mile from the Rio Grande which forms the border with Mexico. It has a median income of $18.000 per family. The post office was opened in 1878 and the town was officially established in 1880. Over the years the population seesawed in size ranging from 300 to more than 1.000 residents. The most well-known landmark of the city is the Spanish Cemetery, established in the 18th century when Santa Marina was a part of a Spanish colony.
