Telferner is an unincorporated community in Victoria County that can be found in the southern region of the U.S. state of Texas. It was established in 1882 as a railroad depot and it was formerly known as Jasmine during that time. A post office was inaugurated thirteen years later under the name Keeran, after the depot’s location on John Keeran’s Ranch. It was then renamed to Telferner in 1908, after Joseph Telfener, an Italian count and financier who became the president and one of the builders of the New York, Texas, and Mexican Railway. Five stores, a gin, a lumberyard, and oilfield were the community’s early industries. Despite that, the population gradually declined, closing at 700 residents in the year 2000.
