Terlingua is a census-designated place (CDP) and mining district located Brewster County in the US state of Texas. It is situated near the Texas villages of Study Butte and Lajitas, as well as Rio Grande and the Mexican state of Chihuahua. Miners began migrating here in the 1880s after cinnabar — from where mercury is extracted — was discovered. Another mineral known as terlinguaite was discovered around California Hill. As a result, the town’s population grew to 2000. In 1994, the community’s population had declined to 25, but had 13 businesses. The population had grown to 267 in 2000 and declined to 58 in 2010.
