Thomaston is an unincorporated community in DeWitt County, in the U.S. state of Texas. It is located on US 87, east of the county. The community was the county’s first railroad townsite; it was established in 1872 and was named after Nathan Thomas, the townsite’s land donor. The shipment of cotton, hides, wool, gravel, truck crops, and cattle were the town’s economic activities. Towards the end of the 18th century, Thomaston had sixteen businesses that includes four mills, a lumberyard, and a dentist clinic. However, in the following century, the town failed to retain its prosperity and growth as the highways were built and automotive vehicles made transportation more convenient. The schools and the railroad’s passenger service eventually stopped its operation. The number of residents consequently dropped to forty-five in 1985. As of 2000, the population remained to be the same number.
