Tow is an unincorporated community in Llano County, Texas. It is located on FM 2241, northeast of the county. Tow was the oldest settlement in the county; It was established in 1852, upon the arrival of the Cowan family. Soon, William Tow settled in the area and he named the community after his name when the post office was inaugurated in 1886. Meanwhile, the Cowan family developed a salt bed near a river, which in turn contributed to the town’s growth. The saltworks also became known for its contribution to the Confederate army during the Civil War. The operation was ceased in 1871 when a hurricane, still known as the “salt works cyclone,” hit the town. The number of residents didn’t grow as much but it was swollen from 50 before 1950 to more than 300 by the mid-1970s. As of 2010, it has a population of 1,249.
