Toyah is a town in Reeves County, Texas. It is located on Billingslea Draw, IS 20, US 80, FM 2903, and the Missouri Pacific line. Toyah is the oldest townsite in the county and it is named after the Indian word “toyah,” which means “water.” It was first settled in the early 1880s; a year later, the first train reached the town and a post office was inaugurated. The town became a major cattle-shipping center in the early 19th century. Although at some point, the community lost its shipping business to Toyahvale, the number of residents considerably grew from then. In 1906, a black resident was dragged to death and hanged for living with his white wife. It was published in a newspaper as “Cowboys of Southwest Summarily Punish a Worthless Negro by Rope Method.” The town eventually recovered from the incident and got incorporated in 1933. However, the number of residents gradually declined since then. As of 2010, it has a population of 90.
