Troy is a city in Bell County and is part of the Killeen-Temple-Fort Hood Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on I-35 and the MKT line, northeast of the county. It was founded in 1882 when a railroad depot was built and replaced a nearby earlier community named Troy. Some residents of the old community, referred to as the Old Troy, refused to move to the new site, the New Troy. As a result, both Old and New Troy coexisted for a period of time. The town became known as a shipping center for cotton, livestock, and other agricultural products of the area. The number of residents grew quickly after the town was incorporated in 1964. As of 2010, it has a population of 1,645.
