Named in honor of John Tynan, the area is located in southwestern Bee County. In 1906 a map of the town was drawn by John R. Beasley. In 1906 the town was platted. The community-acquired a post office in 1911. The first cotton gin was built and owned by a Mr. Branden. When the original gin was destroyed by fire in 1916, a new gin was built, and area farmers established the Tynan Gin Company. During the late 1940s, the two neighboring towns consolidated their schools into the Skidmore-Tynan school district. The population was 301 in 2000, which is the same as in the late forties.
