Formed by residents from Mantua, Van Alstyne was named after a railroad stockholder, Marie Van Alstyne, wife of William A. Van Alstyne, the railroad’s surveyor. The town is located in extreme south central of Grayson County. A post office was opened in 1873 and the community grew rapidly for the next century as the Sherman-Dallas Interuban travelled through the area. The town was an active center for retail trade. The last Interurban traveled through Van Alstyne on December 31, 1948, bringing an end to forty years of affordable, dependable transportation. Fall der All festival is an annual event held in Van Alstyne.
