Located in the northeastern portion of Matagorda County, Van Vleck was called Hardeman during the 1840s to honor Bailey Hardeman, one of the signers of Texas Declaration of Independence who died in the early 1830s. In 1901, the town was renamed after W. G. Van Vleck, the superintendent of the parent company of the railroad that was built in 1899. In 1930 the town was forced to move southeast to where it currently stands. The city acquired some attention and fame in 1996 as the home of Charles Austin, a high jumper who won a gold medal at the Summer Olympics that year.
