Formerly known as Gossip, Venus is located in eastern Johnson County. The first settlers arrived around the late 1850s. J. C. Smyth, the founder, named the new community Venus in honor of the daughter of a local physician. The original townsite was an abandoned cornfield. By the mid-1890s Venus was one of the most prosperous towns in Johnson County. The Great Depression and the growth of the nearby Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex led to the town’s decline. By the early 1940s only a drugstore remained which the people chipped in to save in order to prevent Venus from turning into a ghost town. The 1990 Census reported that just under 1,000 people called Venus home.
