Also called Village Station, Village Mills is located in northern Hardin County. It was named for the nearby Village Creek. Village Mills soon became the county’s largest town after a post office was established by 1890. It is part of the Beaumont–Port Arthur Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lumber was a major influence in the local economy. However, the mill closed in the early 1930s. In 1945 the discovery of nearby deposits of oil and natural gas revived the town’s economy. The Wildwood Resort City was constructed and provided a boost for the town. In 2000 the population reached 1,700, a significant increase from the 300 in 1990.
