Wallisville, Texas lies on the east side of the Trinity River in northern Chambers County. This town was the county seat for Chambers County from 1858 to 1908 before it was moved to Anahuac. Wallisville was named after Elisha Henry Roberts Wallis who was one of the original settlers of the site. The Wallis’ home was used to house the arrested Mexican dictator Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna in 1836 as he was transported to Washington, D. C. Wallisville served as a steamboat landing for the Trinity River which serviced the lumber and shipbuilding trades, the two major pillars of the local economy. The townsite was severely destroyed during the 1915 hurricane.
