Welch is a Census-designated place and an unincorporated community in Dawson County, in the U.S. state of Texas. It is located at the intersection of SH 137, SH 83, FM 829, and FM 2053, northwest of the county. It was originally known as Shack Town when it was founded in 1924 upon a land donation for a gin to be established in the area. The name was then renamed to Welch and the town became prominent for its gins that served the cotton-raising community. The town also had schools, churches, and several stores. Despite being unincorporated, the town had its post office, although it was just absorbed from the neighboring Lou and Pride post offices. The number of its residents remained to be relatively small. As of 2010, it has a population of 222.
