Wellington is a city in and the county seat of Collingsworth County, in the U.S. state of Texas. It is located on US 83, in the south-central part of the county. It was founded and first settled in 1876, and it was named after the Duke of Wellington who was greatly admired by the wife of one of the three city promoters when Wellington was still fighting as the county seat. The town started to grow after 1900; cotton and cattle became its economic mainstays. The construction of a railway also amped up the town’s growth in the next decade. Back then, it had 600 residents. Despite the WWII, the city remained to be a prominent farming and ranching center, along with its several grain elevators and gins. The town was modernized in 1970 and a decade later, Wellington reached its zenith with 3,043 souls, which was two-thirds of the county’s population. It gradually reduced after that. As of 2010, it has a population of 2,189.
