West Point is an unincorporated community in Fayette County, in the U.S. state of Texas. It is located north of SH 71, west of the county. Although the land was granted in 1831, it wasn’t until the 1880s that the community was established upon the arrival of a railroad. The landowner’s family developed a fort in the region, and the prolific lands of the nearby Colorado River was known as Wood’s Prairie. The town received its post office in 1894 and by 1900, it had four stores, three hotels, two doctors, two blacksmith shops, two cotton gins, a molasses press, and a cannery. Corn, oil, and gas were among its economic mainstays. From the year 1990 to 2000, the population remained to be at 205.
