Wheeler is a city in and the county seat of Wheeler County, in the U.S. state of Texas. It is located at the intersection of US 83 and SH 152, on the eastern border of the Texas Panhandle region and on the central part of the county. The town and the county were both named after Royall Tyler Wheeler, an American judge who also became a Chief Justice of the Texas Supreme Court. Although the area was first settled in 1881, it wasn’t until 1904 when the town began its establishment, with the help of two ranchers, Rogers and Stanley. A cotton gin, along with several small stores, were the early businesses in town. As of 2010, it has a population of 1,592. Wheeler is home to Alan LaVern Bean, the first Texan and the fourth person to walk on the Moon. In honor of him, the main street in Wheeler is addressed as Alan Bean Street.
