White Deer is a town in Carson County, in the U.S. state of Texas. It is also part of the Amarillo, Texas Metropolitan Statistical Area. It was first populated around 1882, when a land and cattle company settled in the area and started stocking it with cattle. The area was formerly known as Paton, but it was renamed to White Deer in 1889, after the nearby White Deer Creek. Oil and gas were discovered in 1919, which led to the town’s growth. In 1921, the town was incorporated and the number of residents rose to 200 by the mid-1920s. Later that decade, the town was home to almost 3,000 souls, but a catastrophic fire, the effect of the Great Depression, and two hurricanes contributed to its declination. As of 2010, it has a population of 1,000.
