The settlement of Whitewright began in 1878. The town’s name was given for William Whitewright who bought a part of the land where the Missouri-Kansas-Texas railroad was going through. In 10 years’ time after its establishment, Whitewright was incorporated. The city of Whitewright is situated in both Grayson and Fannin counties in Texas. The town is mostly located in Grayson County and a small portion of Whitewright is in Fannin County. The town’s population was 1,604 as of the 2010 census. The city’s public education system is being served by the Whitewright Independent School District. The town’s total area is 1.9 square miles as stated by the U.S Bureau.
