The community’s namesake came from a man with the last name of Whitt who was one of the first settlers in the area. His first name is unknown to this day. The town of Whitt was first settled in the early 1870s. The town was set in a great position to grow its community because it was between Jacksboro and Weatherford. The town’s post office opened in 1877. The town had a population of around 150 residents as of then. In the 1900s, the town’s population grew and reached a number of around five hundred citizens, but the lack of railroad leading to the town caused the town’s population to diminish. Whitt is unincorporated and has just around 38 people living in the community as of the 2000 census.
