Zapata is a CDP situated in Zapata County in Texas. Zapata is also the seat county. The CDP was actually named for a man called Jose Antonio de Zapata who served in the cavalry of the Republic of Rio Grande, he was a revolutionary commander. The town used to be a part of Rio Grande but it was moved to higher grounds before Falcon Dam was completed in 1953. The town has a total area of 9.6 square miles, and two square miles of the land is water. The community of Zapata is unincorporated and has a total population of 5,059 residents.
