Big Tex Urban Farms

Big Tex Urban Farms is proof that initiatives meant to help the people and the community are always a great idea. Big Tex Urban Farms is an urban agriculture project located at the State Fair of Texas Midway in Fair Park. This project started in 2016. In 2020, Big Tex Urban Farms harvested and donated more than 26,000 pounds of food. This is equivalent to 295,000 servings of fresh produce. Nine organizations in the Fair Park and South Dallas communities benefited from the donations made by Big Tex Urban Farms. These organizations work to fight hunger and food insecurity in Texas.

Chandler Family Farm

Chandler Family farm is a small family farm in the heart of Maybank. The owners of the farm are incredibly passionate about producing pasture-raised meat and growing their own produce. Currently, the farm contains over a hundred hens, five roosters, and over forty rock broilers. They also have two dogs named Mabel and Honey, a cat named Grey Kitty, a horse named Olive, and a special bull calf named Lucky. They sell veggies depending on the season. What people keep coming back for are their free-range chicken eggs. They also offer pasture-raised beef and pork. Surprisingly, they also offer cut flower bouquets. Comeback Creek Farm

In a hundred miles east of Dallas, you will reach Comeback Creek Farm. John, the owner of Comeback Creek Farm, founded the farm in 2005. His wife, Aliza, started helping hin in 2012. With a hundred-acre land, they can produce different produce. To get a portion of their harvest, you can join their Farm Box Program.  Being community-supported agriculture allows them to get funds from members before planting crops. In return, their members get boxes of produce during harvest season. They also supply produce to local chefs and restaurants. Whether you need fresh produce for the family or for the restaurant you own, leave them a message to get that relationship started!  

Deep Ellum Urban Gardens

Deep Ellum Urban Gardens, in Dallas, Texas, is a community garden in Deep Ellum. This is a project of the Deep Ellum Community Association. The people behind Deep Ellum Urban Gardens wanted to provide opportunities for people to grow food for themselves. Growing gives them the opportunity to be active and avoid a sedentary lifestyle. Another benefit from this is allowing the people to get to know each other. So far, they have grown peppers, tomatoes, basil, and eggplants. It is a common sight to see gardeners and volunteers tending to the garden, especially on a beautiful, sunny day.

Led by refugees from Cambodia and Bhutan, this unique garden receives mentorship from anthropologist Don Lambert, who assists with technical and legal aspects of community gardening. Nestled among apartments and businesses on Fitzhugh Avenue, it stands out as one of the area's most productive and vibrant green spaces. With a diverse range of vegetables, educational opportunities, and plant sales, the garden offers a complete experience for visitors. East Texas Homestead Farms

Vic and Cynthia Savelli proudly own East Texas Homestead Farms, a sprawling 58-acre property with a rich history as one of East Texas's early naturalist havens and a top Black Hereford Cattle breeder. Their farm offers premium Black Hereford ground beef and a wide range of vibrant vegetables, including kale, Swiss chard, broccoli, spinach, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts, to name a few. F.A.R.M. Urban Park is a 501c3 veterans organization that assists veterans in finding opportunities in agriculture. F.A.R.M. Urban Park is located in Dallas, Texas. The acronym explains what they do: Farmers Assisting Returning Military. We've all heard of stories about how difficult it is for soldiers returning from overseas deployment. Many of them find a hard time fitting in. They have a hard time adjusting to civilian life. Many of them have problems like PTSD. Introducing them to farming helps them in many ways. It is therapeutic. It also gives them a sense of purpose and belonging. Lastly, it gives them an opportunity for a new livelihood and source of income.  

Fisher Family Farm and Ranch

Boonpeng and David Fisher owns and manages the Fisher Family Farm and Ranch. The couple both grew up in an agriculturally-inclined environment. Boonpeng spent her young to adult years in the rice fields of Thailand while David grew up in a truck farm somewhere in East Texas. Since the 1800s, David's family has been farming in Van Zandt County. Today, with the couple managing the farm, they produce different fruits and vegetables. Of course, that's with a Thai influence, now that Boonpeng is there. Aside from delicious produce, the farm also raises Angus cows and Brangus cows. The American Cheese Society has graced them with multiple ribbons, including a 3rd place for their “Goat Caerphilly in 2012”. They makes Gouda, Caerphilly, Cotswold, and Manchego that are all nuanced in flavor and texture. The goat Gouda - aged between four and six months it is firm, but the mouth feel is rich, not dry or waxy. It's sweet and delicate in flavor, with hints of salted caramel.
