5 Stones Artisan Brewery

Craft Brewery in New Braunfels -

5 Stones Artisan Brewery was founded in 2012 by Seth Weatherly. Currently based in New Braunfels, 2017 was a big year for 5 Stones. Starting out as a hobby homebrewer until the company’s founding, Seth now works with Garrett Crowell, a former head brewer at another company. Seth also moved the brewery to its present-day 19-acre location from its previous 1200 square feet space in a Cibolo industrial park. With his first brew, the award-winning Aloha Piña, and dozens of other handcrafted recipes, the company continues to brew seasonal artisan beers at the new location. The place is “a little hidden… with abundant outdoor seating and space for dogs to play and kids to run”. Complementing the indoor setup is an outdoor seating area. It's a “beautiful and relaxing atmosphere” with fire pits, food trucks on occasion, and live music. In case you’re wondering, “5 Stones” refers to the little-known bible trivia that David carefully chose 5 stones to beat Goliath.

Black Laboratory Brewing

Craft Brewery in San Antonio -

Tim Castaneda and Jeff Weihe, the two “mad scientists” behind Black Laboratory Brewing, first met at work. With their backgrounds in microbiology and biochemistry, respectively, Tim and Jeff have been applying their scientific backgrounds in the science and art of homebrewed craft beers since 2015. The division of labor is scientific, too. Jeff works on stuff like water pH, while Tim keeps an eye on yeast cultivation. Mox the mascot joins the two scientists in the endeavor and takes center stage as the brewery’s logo image. Tim and Jeff jumped from scientists/home-brewer to brewer/businessmen with help from “Break Fast & Launch”, a San Antonio startup incubator. With a solid business plan in hand, they’re set to open their taproom at East Houston’s new Hackberry Market in late 2019. Meanwhile, they have been busy with paperwork, construction, and keeping their fans abuzz with appearances at events.

Boerne Brewery

Craft Brewery in Boerne -

Boerne, Texas is a town rich in German history, but until the Boerne Brewery was established, the town didn’t have a beer to call its very own. That situation changed in January 2014. Established by husband and wife Fred and Jennifer Castillo, Boerne Brewery aims to produce “beer brewed in Boerne, for Boerne”. Both engineers, Fred got hooked on home brewing when Jennifer gave him a Mr. Beer Kit. Eventually, Jennifer kicked him out of the kitchen and garage, and started searching for a property in the area that could house a brewery. The rest, as they say, is history. Housed in a 6,000 square foot facility, the brewery currently has four main brews and two seasonal offerings. To honor the town’s German roots, their beers are named after a significant piece of Boerne history. The label for each beer is made by local artists, and strengthens their ties to the Boerne community.

Busted Sandal Brewing Company

Craft Brewery in San Antonio -

Busted Sandal Brewing Company, like many craft breweries, started out as a dream venture for its founders. In 2001, two friends were drinking beers and discussing “what-ifs”. It took these same friends over a decade to build what they had initially discussed back in 2001. Finally open in 2013, the brewery is named after an actual busted sandal the same two friends found at the parking lot of the place where they had just been drinking and discussing their dreams. To them, the sandal represented a good life lived. That is exactly the kind of beers they want to create – beers that creates fun, fond memories. Check out their website for locations where you can find Busted Sandal beers on draft and in cans.

Cactus Land Brewing Company

Craft Brewery in Adkins -

Cactus Land Brewing Company was named after the prickly pear cactus growing on the 7-acre property it is situated on. Husband-and-wife Dustin and Erica Teague started, just like other brewers before them, with homebrewing. And like other brewers, they have had hits and misses. “The first brew was awful,” recalls Erica during an interview, and the cleanup as Erica described it seemed brutal. Determined, they doggedly continued, and eventually, started winning homebrewing competitions. Finally, with their Texas license approved on June 2016, they started building their brewery. The DIYers worked at night away from their day jobs and on weekends, and successfully completed a Kickstarter campaign. Since their initial opening, they’ve added a stage, a covered patio, and fenced in a large open area for kids. As a small artisanal brewery, Cactus Land remains committed to creating “diverse beer for diverse people”. Currently, they keep their operation manageable by opening only during the first and third weekends of each month.
