Brigadoon Brewery & Brew School

Craft Brewery in Pasadena - 11.55 mi

The Brigadoon Brewery & Brew School attempts to recreate the "Scottish Renaissance brewpub". Located on the grounds of the Texas Renaissance Festival, it allows guests to step back in time and see "period specific" brewing equipment and techniques. This includes use of ingredients and recipes that would have been available during the 1400s through the 1600s”. Opened in 2008, the brewery uses modern equipment, too, but they try to remain an authentic and “unique living history demonstration” of techniques used during the Renaissance period. The brewery takes its name from the 1947 musical of the same name. The musical “centers (on) an enchanted village in Scotland, (and) features an array of traditional music and dance". Each year, at festival time from October to November, the team dons authentic period costumes to serve their beers. Check out Brigadoon's classes on craft beer brewing and join tours of the brewery during the festival. You can also find them at various other festivals around Texas.

With at least 12 beers to choose from, some are exclusive to the taproom only. Opened in 2016, they “specialize in lighter style beers but dark beer fans can enjoy the Bull Shark, their Scottish ale". A blogger advises readers to ask their bartenders about “High Grade” and the beer's interesting backstory during the prohibition era.

Bakfish Brewing Company

Craft Brewery in Pearland - 19.14 mi

Established by friends Brian Allen and Kris Szecsy, they quit their jobs to establish the brewery in 2016. Houston metro area’s third largest city was somewhat of a “beer desert” because it had no local brewery of its own prior to its opening. With a 2,000 square foot air-conditioned taproom and a large covered patio, the brewery accommodates seating for about 300. There are five flagship brews including I Tell You Wit (a Belgian wit bier), Golden Ale (a blond ale), and Defying Gravity double IPA, with rotating seasonal and small batch releases at the taproom. The brewery does not serve food but has scheduled rotating food trucks onsite. Guests can also have food delivered or bring their own at the family- and dog-friendly brewpub.

Craft Brewery in Houston - 21.87 mi

And, 10 years after and countless beer batches brewed, they finally decided to start a brewery. True Anomaly is also space-themed. This includes the building's exteriors. And also, the “contemporary-industrial interiors”. Plus, the NASA posters hanging from the walls and the names of its beers. All of which are related to the founders’ backgrounds.

And they have certainly applied their knowledge – in selecting the beer types and brands they carry and through their recommendations to their patrons. City Acre Brewing Co.

Craft Brewery in Houston - 22.64 mi

Just 10 minutes north of downtown Houston, the City Acre Brewing finally opened in 2016 and Houston fell in love. The four-year delay did the owners a favor. They used the place as an events venue while they completed their Texas permits. Meanwhile, the plants and trees in the area had time to grow, and the brewpub had time to perfect its beers and recipes. When they finally opened, the raised vegetable gardens became a source for the seasonal farm-to-table menu. “I found the setting enchanting,” says one review, “(and) gardeners will enjoy checking out (the garden).” With Adirondack chairs and picnic tables scattered about, “it was quite easy to spend a few hours enjoying the blossoming gardens,” says another. The beers on taps, of course, are getting rave reviews, too. In addition, the brewery offers beer cocktails, a selection of wines, and feature their own house-made sodas.

Under The Radar Brewery

Craft Brewery in Houston - 23.34 mi

As with other craft breweries, Under The Radar Brewery got its start in homebrewing. Its three founders brewed in their garage until they realized they could bring their hobby to the next level. Starting out small and opening without so much as a sign, the brewery’s name suggests how things were initially done at the brewery. It also found a perfect spot among condos and townhomes, and further bolsters the under-the-radar nature of the brewery. Their taproom, though small, has an outdoor area, and serves five “usuals” (their core beers) and a couple of seasonal/ special beers. It’s also kid- and dog-friendly, much like a backyard in one’s neighborhood. They’re not canning their brews yet, but do check their website for updates on where their beers are available.

Platypus Brewing

Craft Brewery in Houston - 23.57 mi

Platypus Brewing is a craft brewery and taproom serving “handcrafted beers and Australian-inspired comfort food” in cozy digs with a patio. They have a mix of ales, ranging from the “smooth and dry-hopped red ales to classic American wheat options.” They also have a menu of cheeses and charcuterie plates, salads and Aussie-inspired items available at the kitchen. If you are looking for a private event venue, they have a unique space called “mezzanine,” a perfect vantage point, overlooking the action of the brewery on one side and views to downtown Houston from the other. It will certainly leave a lasting impression for your event!

Ingenious Brewing Company

Craft Brewery in Humble - 23.69 mi

Ingenious Brewing Company is by Mike Broderick, its head brewer, and Justin Gyorfi, urologist by profession. The brewery specializes in “small batch beers” that “diverge from traditional norms”. With 24 taps that tend to be “outside-the-box”, the brewery releases beers that “look awesome on an Instagram feed”. If demand is any indication, the beers are delicious, too. Less than a year from their first anniversary, the brewery is barely able to keep up with the demand and is eyeing to open a second location. The brewery specializes in “tart fruited sours, pastry stouts, hop-loaded IPAs, and milkshake IPAs”. Enjoy them at the 2,000 square meter air-conditioned taproom, possibly including the “colorful” Smarty Stone beers. This line of beers took inspiration from the colors of Marvel’s Infinity Stones. You’ll have to come often, though, since they rotate beers often. You might even see a favorite making a comeback.

Holler Brewing Company

Craft Brewery in Houston - 23.80 mi

After a long circuitous life journey, husband and wife John and Kathryn found their true calling by establishing Holler Brewing Company. Thank the beer gods that the Hollers decided to move to Houston in 2009. To prepare, both ditched their unrelated old jobs, and separately undertook a different route towards the brewery business. John earned his diploma from Siebel Institute of Chicago. Kathryn, meanwhile, racked up hands-on experience at a brewery in Florida. In November 2016, they finally opened the brewery and haven’t looked back since. At the taproom, find a rotating list of about 6-8 beers. Stop by often. They have created over 100 brewing recipes since they started, and you’re bound to find something new with each visit. As if the beers aren’t enough, every Wednesday is Steak Night with their partner, Snow Topi.

Fetching Lab Brewery

Craft Brewery in Texas City - 24.24 mi

The owners of Fetching Lab Brewery are Brett Bray and Theresa Hutchings, but everyone knows that Bella is both mascot and CEO. Brett was a real-life NASA scientist while Theresa worked as quality assurance lead at one of world’s largest airplane manufacturers. According to Brett and Theresa, we can’t show Bella a ball or she’ll ask you to play “fetch” the whole day long. You see, Bella’s a Yellow Lab, and pretty much runs the whole place. She even gets to choose the pooch that’s featured in Fetching Lab’s lineup of delicious beers. Fetching Lab first started creating their beers in Alvin, Texas and sold their first kegs in 2015. In late December 2018, however, they expanded operations and have their own taproom in Texas City. They currently create five year-round “full production brews” that are available in other taprooms and four seasonal offerings. These are available only at their taproom or in limited quantities.
