Backstory Brewery

Craft Brewery in Sulphur Springs - 18.23 mi

Dr. Robert Lenington wears many hats and owner of Backstory Brewery is one of them. After settling in Sulphur Springs and opening his medical practice, he and head brewer Phillip Rose discussed the benefits of opening a brewery to serve the Sulphur Springs community. A homebrewer himself, the doctor’s friendship with Phillip goes back over 20 years. Soon after, they both made the leap and established BackStory Brewery in 2017. With the mantra “good people deserve great beer”, the co-founders are dedicated to brewing “the highest quality craft beer available”. This “small town brewery” stands on a building that was built in 1907. It has a kid- and a dog-friendly environment with a wide selection of in-house brews. “You’d only expect (this brewery) in a much larger city… the best cold brews in town!” It is really "fortunate" that there is "this amazing brewery" which is really "fitting for some of the coolest hangouts in Uptown Dallas or Austin!"

Thirsty Bro Brewing

Craft Brewery in Royse City - 26.44 mi

Husband and wife Terry and Catherine Gordon are first time commercial brewers who opened Thirsty Bro Brewing in Royse City. Opened in March 2017, Thirsty Bro Brewing is the city's first brewery. The brewery uses “the finest hops, grains, and other ingredients”. For extra thirsty bros and bro-ettes, there’s a 17oz Tankards Club. Members get access to a wide variety of beers and gluten-reduced selections”. Located at the historic downtown area of the city, the brewery invites guests to order from a local restaurant or go BYOF (bring your own food).

Hemisphere Brewing Co.

Craft Brewery in Rockwall - 34.03 mi

Hemisphere Brewing Company opened in 2017 and creates “handcrafted, traditional and not-so-traditional beers” at their brewery in Rockwall. Its owners are Brandon Mullins and Ruben Garcia and both trace their friendship back to 1998, when both were playing together for a band. Both have a passion for good quality beers, and the first-time business owners eventually established the company in 2012. The road to opening the taproom was long and bumpy, but they finally opened on St. Patrick’s Day 2017. They currently have a lineup of 13 beers including the well-received Black Sacrament (an American Imperial Stout). With more beers planned for launch, the duo invites fans to join The Breakfast Club. It’s a members-only club that, among others, gets you access to private beer tastings and brewery merchandise.

Woodcreek Brewing Company

Craft Brewery in Rockwall - 34.06 mi

Woodcreek Brewing Company is Rockwall’s first brewery – and also its oldest brewery to date. Established in 2014 and operated starting May 2015, owners Noah Cutshall and Brad Bramblett were active members of a local homebrewing group. Like most homebrewers, they started in their own garage. They eventually named their brewery in honor of their Woodcreek neighborhood in Fate, Texas. "These folks are awesome! Lots of great beers, and plenty to choose from". Also, "would also highly recommend their IPA, Bock, Vanilla Porter, and Strawberry Rhubarb beer". Finally, Noah and Brad initially applied their licenses for Longhorn Brewing Company. They decided to change the name in remembrance of where they started.

Cypress Creek Southern Ales

Craft Brewery in Winnsboro - 38.68 mi

Cypress Creek Southern Ales is a small batch nano-brewery in Winnsboro. Mike Howard and his family owns and operates the brewery, which opened August 2018. Currently one of the highest rated brewery on the popular beer-centric app Untappd, it is also the lone representative for Texas. Mike is a veteran of the U.S. Navy and specialized in IT upon leaving the service. His brewing philosophy simply means he brews “the beers (he and his family) want to drink". The brewery currently has almost 50 beers available for rating on Untappd, which are all named after something in Winnsboro or in connection with the East Texas area. According to one review, the brewery's taproom is “small and cozy”. However, the beers are “nothing short of sudsy divine-ness”. In good weather, the outdoor area becomes a venue for corn hole and horseshoe games.

Tupps Brewery

Craft Brewery in McKinney - 40.04 mi

The “Tupps” in TUPPS Brewery is Tupper Patnode, its co-founder, head brewer, and half of a two-man partnership. Its other half is co-founder Keith Lewis, a sales and marketing guy. Together, they blend art and science, and sprinkle in some business savvy to run a successful brewery. They start with great beer, which accounts for the artistic side, and use the senses to create, validate, and refine the beers. The scientific side comes in “to ensure quality and consistency in the brewing process”. A brewery is a business, however, and needs business smarts. For TUPPS, that means using management tools to streamline operations or taking in an excellent distribution partner. It seems Keith and Tupper perfected beer brewing. They opened in 2015, and a year later, production grew by 400 percent in total volume. Visit TUPPS at McKinney’s historic Cotton Mill complex and see for yourself. They have free tours every Saturday at 12:30pm.

Franconia Brewing Co.

Craft Brewery in Fredericksburg - 40.18 mi

Founded by Brewmaster Dennis Wehrmann, Franconia Brewing Co. is a company in McKinney that started operations in 2008. Dennis comes from a long family line of brewmasters. He traces his family’s involvement in beer to a great great grandfather. Grandfather Schaubert owned and operated a brewery in Germany in the 1800s. Dennis also got his start in traditional German brewing practices in Germany until his move to the U.S. in 1999. Under his guidance, Franconia strictly follows the Reinheitsgebot or German Purity Law. They only stray from tradition for special releases. The brewery is also equally known for their “green” brewing practices. The brewery’s eco-friendly facilities include an on-site mini-power plant that works on renewable fuels such as solar and natural gas. 100% of the plant's power requirement comes from these renewable sources. They use 100% natural ingredients and also donate spent mash for conversion to cattle feed by local farmers.

Bankhead Brewing Company

Craft Brewery in Rowlett - 40.87 mi

Bankhead Brewing Company is the brainchild of chef Kevin Lefere and brewmaster Ryan Pyle. They were both eager to open their own brewpubs, but didn't feel equipped to operate and manage a successful brewpub on their own. A chance introduction by mutual friends in 2014 eventually blossomed into a partnership. By Spring 2016, they opened Bankhead Brewing Company. The brewery’s namesake is the old Bankhead highway. Built in 1916, the highway ran from Washington, D.C. to San Diego and spanned downtown Rowlett. The pioneering spirit that built the highway reflects the same spirit that inspired its founders to build their own brewery and restaurant. One hundred years later, the pair are serving their award-winning craft beers and delicious, fresh-from-the-wood-burning-oven food in downtown Rowlett.

Four Bullets Brewery

Craft Brewery in Richardson - 48.35 mi

The brewery is Richardson’s first and fondly called “the smallest brewery in Dallas”. The brewery started with just four craft beer varieties when they opened, and now has over a dozen varieties. The owners like to say they are not in competition with big, large breweries. Instead, they wish to be known as “a neighborhood brewery catering to the Richardson area”.  With tasty offerings like their popular Royal Flush Red Irish-style pale ale, all Four Bullets beers have casino or poker-themed names.
