Whole Food Market Brewing Company

Craft Brewery in Houston - 7.82 mi

Whole Foods Market Brewing is one of two Whole Foods U.S. locations with a brewery inside the store. Its current brewer, James Carlyle, took over after his mentor Dave Ohmer left. According to James, the brewery is “an off the wall concept of grocery store and brewery in one”. This Houston location on 1700 Post Oak Blvd also distributes to a few bars including The Flying Saucer and Craft Beer Cellar. The other location in San Jose also has a brewery but does not serve other accounts. According to an online interview with James, the team uses a 5BBL system for now but hopes to expand soon, including canning their own brews.

Baileson Brewing Company

Craft Brewery in Houston - 7.91 mi

Established by husband Adam Cryer and his wife, Sarah Pope, the Baileson Brewing Company features two of man’s best friends – beers and pooches. The “pooches” part come from the company’s name – a combination of the couple’s two dogs Bailey and Jameson. (They have a third fur baby called Beau, who came later.) The brewery, of course, supplies the handcrafted beers, especially ales. Located in the outskirts of the Rice Village area in Houston, the brewery was an old gas station built in 1950 until the building became an auto-service station in the mid-1970s. The couple retained the exterior canopy, which serves as the brewpub’s patio, and fitted it with picnic tables. They allow non-beer fans to bring wine from their neighbor next door, and allow outside food. The place, of course, is “dog-friendliest”, with the couple claiming that their pooches “have better social lives” than their humans.

4J Brewing Company

Craft Brewery in Houston - 9.20 mi

4J Brewing Company is a family-owned craft nano-brewery owned and operated by four siblings. The “J” refers to their names – Jessica, Jackie, Joana, and Jennifer. They currently offer five varieties of craft beers ranging from 5.1% to 6.7% (plus non-alcoholic root beer!). This 100% female-owned and female-brewed operation is based in the Houston/Spring Branch area and serves Amber Ale, Blonde Ale, India Pale Ale, Pale Ale, and American Stout at their taproom. The 4J’s beers are only available at their taproom. The siblings have decorated the place with many repurposed items from the 4J Ranch. (Mom and Dad also own 4J Ranch in Blue, Texas.) They also accept special private events at the taproom and offer memberships into the 4J Ladies. The 4J Ladies hold monthly events on the last Thursday of each month, and usually invite female business owners to talk about their expertise.

11 Below Brewing Company

Craft Brewery in Houston - 11.60 mi

11 Below Brewing Company currently offers 13 varieties of craft beer – so, no, their name does not refer to the excellent beers they brew in North Houston. Here’s a hint – their co-founders worked at Texas oilfields at some point, but their love for beers led them to brewing beers instead. Four out of the 13 varieties they brew are available all year round, while the rest are seasonal offerings or specials so call ahead before heading out the door. All are available on draft while a selection is available in 12 oz cans at your favorite retailers. Oh – and all have clever names with “best paired with” recommendations. The company has a tasting room open to the public. Hours are Thursdays to Fridays from 5pm to 9pm, and Saturdays and Sundays from 12pm to 9pm.  Admission is free, and they’re also available for private events.

Ingenious Brewing Company

Craft Brewery in Humble - 11.79 mi

Ingenious Brewing Company is by Mike Broderick, its head brewer, and Justin Gyorfi, urologist by profession. The brewery specializes in “small batch beers” that “diverge from traditional norms”. With 24 taps that tend to be “outside-the-box”, the brewery releases beers that “look awesome on an Instagram feed”. If demand is any indication, the beers are delicious, too. Less than a year from their first anniversary, the brewery is barely able to keep up with the demand and is eyeing to open a second location. The brewery specializes in “tart fruited sours, pastry stouts, hop-loaded IPAs, and milkshake IPAs”. Enjoy them at the 2,000 square meter air-conditioned taproom, possibly including the “colorful” Smarty Stone beers. This line of beers took inspiration from the colors of Marvel’s Infinity Stones. You’ll have to come often, though, since they rotate beers often. You might even see a favorite making a comeback.

Fortress Beer Works

Craft Brewery in Spring - 16.69 mi

Fortress BeerWorks based in Spring, Texas opened in mid-March 2019. Dion Billard was a homebrewer and friends Robert Fleming, John O’Hara, and Shawn Stasiuk used to hang around his garage for his beers. The four were friends at their day job. The brewery’s opening makes it Spring’s first and the 53rd for the Greater Houston area. The secluded but inviting taproom and brewery has over 6,600 square feet of space for guests. The indoor and outdoor seating areas easily accommodate over 100 people. There’s a fenced in playground for kids with plans to add more kid-friendly stuff. Food trucks will provide the food although guests are welcome to bring in their own. The brewery is also ideal for owners to bring their dogs. For options other than beer, the brewery has cider, root beer, and a selection of wines.

Back Pew Brewing

Craft Brewery in Porter - 17.21 mi

Bobby Harl established his craft brewery in 2015 inside an old church building and named it Back Pew Brewing. The 14-acre property the church sits on houses a taproom appropriately named “The Sanctuary”. With a large selection of brew creations, the so-called Houston prodigal son Harl offers his guests a choice between his Saints or Sinners line-up. The Saint beers are identifiable with their mostly white labels and described as “more traditional, ‘sessionable’ beers with lower ABVs”. The Sinners line, meanwhile, is denoted with mostly black labels, tap handles, or cans, and consist of “more unorthodox and less common ‘big’ beers”. These beers have higher ABVs, and therefore, are “more challenging”. The taproom is open Thursdays to Sundays, with food trucks available on Saturdays. Guests are welcome to bring outside food. Kids can play in the expansive yard, and pets are welcome, too!

Brigadoon Brewery & Brew School

Craft Brewery in Pasadena - 17.35 mi

The Brigadoon Brewery & Brew School attempts to recreate the "Scottish Renaissance brewpub". Located on the grounds of the Texas Renaissance Festival, it allows guests to step back in time and see "period specific" brewing equipment and techniques. This includes use of ingredients and recipes that would have been available during the 1400s through the 1600s”. Opened in 2008, the brewery uses modern equipment, too, but they try to remain an authentic and “unique living history demonstration” of techniques used during the Renaissance period. The brewery takes its name from the 1947 musical of the same name. The musical “centers (on) an enchanted village in Scotland, (and) features an array of traditional music and dance". Each year, at festival time from October to November, the team dons authentic period costumes to serve their beers. Check out Brigadoon's classes on craft beer brewing and join tours of the brewery during the festival. You can also find them at various other festivals around Texas.

Texas Leaguer Brewing Company

Craft Brewery in Missouri City - 17.65 mi

Texas Leaguer Brewing Company is a brewery with a baseball theme. Owner Nathan Rees invites you to join him and his staff from Friday to Sunday (hours vary) to “come watch a game on (their) big screen, play games, or hear some live music”. The brewery occupies a 12,000 sq ft warehouse set with communal picnic tables. The adjacent patio is dog-friendly and perfect for good weather days. With about seven beers on tap, the sports-centric bar gives heavy emphasis on baseball. Choose from their lineup using the big green baseball scorecard that lists available beers. Drop by on Farm System Fridays and catch their small batch releases. There’s also Little Leaguer Root Beer for the kids and the kids-at-heart.

Bearded Fox Brewing Co.

Craft Brewery in Tomball - 18.13 mi

Bearded Fox Brewing Co. is a craft microbrewery in Tomball that simply wants to create and serve great beer. The founders hope that when you drink their beer, you’ll feel good about it. That, for its founders, is the essence of a good beer. They also believe in sustainability and going local, which is why they source their ingredients from as many local sources as they can. And – they’ve kept it simple and local, too. Just beer and no food – they have local food trucks on rotation if you’re hungry.

You might wonder why they named their brewery and taproom Bearded Fox. It’s because the owners all have beards, and their wives they say, are foxes. Whether one believes that part or not doesn’t matter. They have been open since 2017 and they simply have great beer including four core beers and several on rotation.

Megaton Brewery

Craft Brewery in Kingwood - 18.24 mi

His brewing experience and culinary training led to years of experimental brewing well outside the boundaries of traditional beer styles. At Megaton Brewery, you can “experience, appreciate and enjoy their distinctive beer and atmosphere.” From the northeast side of Houston, they utilize their state of art 15 barrel brew house to create exclusive recipes using only the finest ingredients!

Vallenson’s Brewing Company

"It's got a great outdoor space: a small (but roomy) patio that opens onto a huge yard with a large tree growing in the center". Also, "they brew everything there, and they constantly have new stuff on the rotation since their system is designed for pretty small batches". They are also "dog-friendly and family-friendly with a large outdoor space for kids to play!" "Frisbee and cornhole available" too. And, "in a world of large micro breweries, Vallensons refers to themselves as a nano, they truly hold their ground".

Twisted Acre Brewery

Craft Brewery in Cypress - 21.27 mi

When Robert Brogdon and wife Nicole opened their brewery Twisted Acre Brewery and taproom in December 2018, it was the fulfillment of a dream. The couple had been homebrewing since 2012, starting with Nicole giving Robert a home brewing kit. Since then, they’ve enjoyed a reputation at local festivals with their beers. Despite an unsuccessful Kickstarter campaign, the couple went ahead with their dreams. They even quit their jobs to set up the brewery. “I told him if we waited until we had enough money to do this, we'd be waiting forever," Nicole says in an interview prior to the opening of the brewery. The brewery currently has a 3.5 BBL equipment. They would have wanted something larger if the Kicstarter campaign had been successful. For their beers, the couple focuses on “unexpected flavors”. They’ve incorporated “rich flavors like toffee and caramel”. A butterscotch cream ale, Buttercream, is one of their more popular beers.

Bakfish Brewing Company

Craft Brewery in Pearland - 22.27 mi

Bakfish Brewing Company has a distinction that no one can ever take away -- Pearland’s first craft brewery and brewpub. Established by friends Brian Allen and Kris Szecsy, they quit their jobs to establish the brewery in 2016. Houston metro area’s third largest city was somewhat of a “beer desert” because it had no local brewery of its own prior to its opening. With a 2,000 square foot air-conditioned taproom and a large covered patio, the brewery accommodates seating for about 300. There are five flagship brews including I Tell You Wit (a Belgian wit bier), Golden Ale (a blond ale), and Defying Gravity double IPA, with rotating seasonal and small batch releases at the taproom. The brewery does not serve food but has scheduled rotating food trucks onsite. Guests can also have food delivered or bring their own at the family- and dog-friendly brewpub.

Fire Ant Brewing

Craft Brewery in Tomball - 22.95 mi

It took quite a while for the owners of Fire Ant Brewing to have their dream brewery – almost eight years, they say. After getting approval from the city, they still had to wait some more for construction and a few setbacks. Everyone seems to agree, however, that the wait was worth it. A true brewpub, Fire Ant Brewing also features a restaurant and a bar patio that’s been voted #1 in Tomball. The brewpub serves the town known for its strong German heritage, and also the surrounding areas of Woodlands, Spring, Magnolia and the Cypress. With this in mind, the brewpub made sure to have a few German-inspired food and beers on the menu. Fire Ant is great for families and dog-friendly. Watch their social media pages for announcements on their happy hours and other events.

Wicked Boxer Brewing

Craft Brewery in Cypress - 24.01 mi

Wicked Boxer Brewing’s owners are fond of dogs, especially the boxer breed. With the black and white mug of a boxer as a logo, Cypress residents and brewery owners Jamie and Brian Cain envisioned a kid-friendly and dog-friendly brewery and taproom for local residents. They also wanted to create a “community-driven business”, which explains their successful Kickstarter campaign. One of their community projects include collaborating with Houston Boxer Rescue to help raise funds and hold adoption events. Combining their passion for craft beer and boxers, they named their brewery after the traits of their beloved breed – “playful, fun, entertaining, and of course oh-so-wicked!” Note: They are in the process of moving out of their Mueschke Rd taproom. Watch their social media pages for the grand reopening at 8190 Barker Cypress Rd. Suite 300.
